A Bourbon Street bartender died early Sunday after a stray bullet hit him in the chest, New Orleans police confirm to WDSU.
Spencer Hudson, 46, was tending bar at the Cat's Meow karaoke bar just after 2 a.m. Sunday when the bullet flew in from the street and hit him in the chest. He died at the scene.
"This man was just working," a longtime friend and former bartender said. "He was just working. He was doing a job, and something like his happened."
Friends say Hudson was planning a trip to Japan, where he hoped to teach English to students.
"Talk about a renaissance man," the friend added. "He was just a very special person who definitely didn't deserve what happened to him."
Police took in the suspected shooter, 24-year-old Daphney Jackson, at the scene. She was booked for manslaughter, obstruction of justice and illegal use of weapons.
