NEW ORLEANS —
Forty percent of firefighters in New Orleans are not vaccinated, according to the firefighters union.
As for the New Orleans Police Department, the Fraternal Order of Police says roughly 20% of officers in New Orleans are not vaccinated.
The city's policy went into place Monday, mandating that all first responders either be vaccinated or have proof of a negative COVID-19 test.
The unions have concerns on whether cops and firefighters can get a rapid test.
"If you have to go out and get your own PCR test from one of these pods, we've heard stories of people having to wait eight, nine or 10 days," said Aaron Michler, head of the New Orleans Firefighters Union. "That is going to put a hit on the manpower which is already low."
That total adds up to about 250 to 260 firefighters.
