About WBOK 1230AM
WBOK 1230AM is one of the oldest and longest running Black-owned radio stations in the country. The station covers news, current events, politics, cultural happenings, sports and much more. In addition to engaging with the audience over the air waves, WBOK is an active part of the community hosting or participating in many events and public gatherings throughout Greater New Orleans.
WBOK History
Throughout its history, WBOK has broadcasted different formats, including R&B, Gospel, Christian and TOP 40. During the American Civil Rights movement WBOK was a trusted source of information used by activists and organizers like the Freedom Riders, SNCC (the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee), and others to reach the Black community.
Following Hurricane Katrina WBOK changed format again to meet the need for timely, unfiltered information to flow to the African American community of Greater New Orleans, WBOK became a News Talk station informing, educating, and leading the public while speaking truth to power about the issues and disparities facing Black people and other minorities, specifically, post-Hurricane Katrina.
